Blue Heron at the Edge of the Pond

Blue Heron at the edge of the pond
I’ve seen you from previous springs
I know I frighten you so,
but you show courage before your flight
Willow wings – slow, graceful –
stretched wide like a martyr before your build
Teach me how to be calm like you,
to soar without breath
Far enough away, I cannot reach
But close enough to tell me that
fear does not control you in the end
