{"id":215,"date":"2020-11-18T01:07:49","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T01:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/16-1\/?page_id=215"},"modified":"2020-11-20T00:26:07","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T00:26:07","slug":"bile-in-the-back-of-my-throat","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/16-1\/poetry\/bile-in-the-back-of-my-throat\/","title":{"rendered":"BILE IN THE BACK OF MY THROAT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>BILE IN THE BACK OF MY THROAT<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">i&nbsp;ride in the middle backseat of the car, my two best friends seated&nbsp;in front&nbsp;of me.&nbsp;there&#8217;s&nbsp;a special kind of hollow bile in the back of my throat that occurs in moments like these \u2013 eventually, it drains and sits at the bottom of my stomach in a bitter, curdled twist.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">it&#8217;s&nbsp;strange and starving and deep.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>l o n e l&nbsp;<\/em><em>i<\/em><em>&nbsp;n e s&nbsp;<\/em><em>s<\/em>.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">not the regular kind, but the foreign sort that invades and consumes you during the times where it has no right to. not with your friends. your&nbsp;<em>best<\/em>&nbsp;friends. but there it is, sucking your lungs so far down into your feet it takes an army of resolve not to crumble down with it. you hate yourself for feeling it. not the surface hate&nbsp;you&#8217;re&nbsp;unafraid to say out loud but the gruesome ugly hate that stitches thorns into your sides and heats your face in shame.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">it&#8217;s&nbsp;your fault.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">no.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">it&#8217;s&nbsp;their fault.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">no.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but some part of you blames it on them and with that blame boils anger in the void behind your sternum and it\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202frises,&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and rises,&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>rises<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and you let it rise until&nbsp;it&#8217;s&nbsp;plundered your\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f<em>belly<\/em><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>chest&nbsp;<\/em><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>neck&nbsp;<\/em><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>head<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and you&nbsp;can&#8217;t&nbsp;choose between wanting to disintegrate or wanting to&nbsp;<em>explode<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but those options aren&#8217;t real, are they?
