{"id":239,"date":"2020-11-18T01:14:27","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T01:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/16-1\/?page_id=239"},"modified":"2020-11-20T01:17:21","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T01:17:21","slug":"nested-things","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/16-1\/poetry\/nested-things\/","title":{"rendered":"Nested Things"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nested Things<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>Every day we make this earth less\u00a0alive, less legal.<\/em><br><em>What is this diminishment<\/em>\u00a0<br><em>but sin against god<\/em>\u00a0<br><em>which is a program<\/em><br><em>to generate complexity?<\/em><\/p><cite><strong><em>Clare Pollard<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dust-laden wind of December\u00a0<br>Smells Saharan.\u00a0<br>I lie in my cold bed as words\u00a0<br>from the chapel hang from the ceiling,\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>from dust you come, dust you go\u2026<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">World, listen.\u00a0<br>I diminish society\u2014a union\u00a0<br>of homemade fire and salt\u00a0\u00a0<br>carving judgment for my body.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I mold darkness in my tongue,\u00a0<br>in my illicit moaning, in decibels flying\u00a0<br>high against the wrench\u00a0<br>of the room\u2019s stillness.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes my body is a pool\u00a0\u00a0<br>of wreck\u2014\u00a0<br>a contraption forged for\u00a0\u00a0<br>complexity,\u00a0<br>many\u00a0times\u00a0a parcel of society,\u00a0<br>a throne of judgment.\u00a0<br>I carve judgment for my body.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man walks in the street\u00a0\u00a0<br>lacing the dusty wind with fire,\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>awake from&nbsp;<\/em><em>your&nbsp;<\/em><em>slumber\u2026<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">if the cold night could give up silence,\u00a0<br>\u2018but who wants to hear what is evil?\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the trailing corner of\u00a0my\u00a0<br>night, I kiss the floor, unsure of the next\u00a0<br>word, next name, next posture. Unsure\u00a0<br>of the marble floor peering\u00a0<br>blank in the dark.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">World, listen.\u00a0<br>When my knees cling to marble,\u00a0<br>what name should I put on my tongue\u2014\u00a0<br>the devil sweeping through the streets\u00a0<br>with chaos, or god watching from the sky?\u00a0<br>What foot parades mercy?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in Hawaii, afternoons\u00a0<br>were planted on solemn walks.\u00a0<br>I wrapped my gaze on a slender\u00a0<br>aspen shaking off for winter, blooming\u00a0<br>for spring.\u00a0<br>A tree knows no regret.\u00a0<br>If society would listen\u2026\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-summary\">\nNested Things\u00a0 Every day we make this earth less\u00a0alive, less legal.What is this diminishment\u00a0but sin against god\u00a0which is a programto generate complexity?
