John Grey
From the start,
the evidence pointed elsewhere.
At the very onset,
the chances were at least a million to one.
And they’ve only widened since.
No, it was not a possibility.
Not a hope.
Because of the mist on the water.
Or the shabby faro parlor. Or the knife thrower.
Or the wheel of fortune.
So many reasons.
Take your pick.
Better the odds of finding
a ruby in a tar pit
or the lost ark
in a crown of thorns.
No astute gambler
would take it on.
A bookmaker would clean up.
So I wouldn’t get your hopes up.
Or your ire either.
Don’t base anything on the possibility.
Or make plans accordingly.
Just go on the assumption
that there was just no way.
You’ll be much happier for it.
I’ll be much the same.
