{"id":260,"date":"2021-04-12T22:13:35","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T22:13:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/16-2\/?page_id=260"},"modified":"2021-04-28T19:42:07","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T19:42:07","slug":"abraham-sarah-and-isaac","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/16-2\/abraham-sarah-and-isaac\/","title":{"rendered":"Abraham (Sarah) and Isaac"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Katherine Kruger<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaac, my siblings, and some other random kids are running in a field.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re supposed to be playing tag, these kids and I,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but my siblings know I don\u2019t run and don\u2019t expect me to.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are in t-shirts and shorts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isaac is wearing a button-down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s always more formal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His mom is always here, unlike ours,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but she\u2019s not outside right now. This kid<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">is letting loose. I can\u2019t blame him.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She seems to like everything perfect.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looks to her for everything, like she knows<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the right answer to, \u201cWhat are you thinking, Isaac?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It drives me nuts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has a demure, yet commanding strength<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and complete control over him.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We just got out of a meeting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re having well-deserved fun,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">so I join in, even running.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I cannot run well. I am at least seven<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">years older than each of these kids<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and I\u2019m still not winning tag.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He taunts me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t do it, you\u2019re a girl,\u201d then,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cgirls can\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kid, you\u2019re eight. I\u2019m just fat.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I take the bait. \u201cOkay, so do you think<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">your dad is better than your mom?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(and I think I have caught him<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">because I\u2019ve seen how dependent he is<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">on the strong, stony woman in there.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stares at me like I\u2019m an idiot.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course he is.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He runs away grinning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only later do I think of the story of Abraham and Isaac<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and wonder if Sarah knew<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">what her husband was ready to do to her son.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Katherine Kruger &nbsp; Isaac, my siblings, and some other random kids are running in a field.
