{"id":405,"date":"2021-04-14T04:23:18","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T04:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/16-2\/?page_id=405"},"modified":"2021-04-28T21:32:03","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T21:32:03","slug":"quilting","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/16-2\/quilting\/","title":{"rendered":"Quilting"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Leah Brodsky<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am like a quilt,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An array of blues and greys,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A variation of ornamentation,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boxes of cognizant memories<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which I want to forget.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am like a quilt<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comfortable and wrapped in my ways<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of non-existent vulnerability<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patterns of not opening-up<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sewn together with the labor of leaving.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I used to make quilts,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sew the patches together like bandages<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tidying up the loose ends of the squares like sandwiches<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of various memories,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the fight that we never made up from.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mean words flowed from our mouths<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the cheap vodka we were drinking.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The craft was a prudent act of fixing the past,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I stopped quilting&#8230;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because I\u2019ve been hurt so many times<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The past repeats to the present&#8211;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve felt comfortable in someone\u2019s blanket<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only to have it ripped, wrinkled like an aged face,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And draped over the bed in the shape<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of my broken heart.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am like a quilt<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who will wrap around the right person<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And keep them warm<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I want them to unhinge me<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Break down my walls<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Untie my seams<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And find the real me.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leah Brodsky &nbsp;
