- Cry. Alot.
This should go without saying, because it’s natural to express these emotions when you’re heartbroken. Just make sure your drinking enough water and have enough sad music on hand, I suggest Taylor Swift’s RED, folklore, and evermore.
- Rediscover Your Self Worth and
understand that you will love someone else just as much, if not more, than the person you are currently heartbroken over.
This step does not require some fancy weeklong spiritual journey to Thailand, or reading a thousand self-help books, although if you have the time and resources by all means.
Start incorporating more black into your wardrobe, as a way to mourn the person you once were. In addition, listen to Taylor Swift’s Reputation when you enter this phase. There is no greater power than wearing a black turtleneck, black jeans and listening to “I Did Something Bad”.
Realize after some time that you are worthy of being loved as you are, even if the person who broke your heart doesn’t love you back.
Start listening to 80’s heavy metal, hair metal, glam rock bands. As a 24-year-old woman, I have never felt more confident than when I listen to Paul Stanley, lead singer of the band KISS sing “’cause girl I was made for you, and girl you were made for me”.
Pick up habits that you wouldn’t otherwise have thought of. 6:30am cycle classes, hanging out with the girls at your work outside of work, re-learn do things on your own.
You will go through phrases when you want to talk about it, then you’ll want to avoid talking about it for the sake of those around you, then you’ll meet a new therapist and start talking about and realize that talking about it wasn’t doing you any good and wow, I don’t have to feel miserable and sad all the time. I can actually be happy and live my life for me.
You will start to set boundaries, necessary and painful ones. You will begin to untangle yourself from the relationship that caused you heartache and find the strength to take a step back.
Begin making plans to pack up your whole life and make small preparations to leave your old one behind, physically and metaphorically.
- Develop an unhealthy love for a Rockstar that is your dad’s age…
*I’m looking at you, Young Paul Stanley.
