i bit my tongue not to tell You that

i take these things seriously, that

i am a poet before anything else and

words sometimes have too much meaning.

i didn’t know how to tell You that

most of my exes have said they love me

within the first week, that

it’s somehow possible to cheapen the word

even to those who believe in

a human being’s infinite capacity for love.

i wanted to tell You that love is a process

for me, that i fall in love too easily and

therefore cannot bring myself to utter it before absolute

certainty.

i rolled my eyes and smiled and thought about

what it feels like

to fall.
