{"id":104,"date":"2022-04-05T01:26:31","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T01:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/17-2\/?page_id=104"},"modified":"2022-04-29T06:28:35","modified_gmt":"2022-04-29T06:28:35","slug":"the-blizzard-of-78","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/17-2\/poetry\/the-blizzard-of-78\/","title":{"rendered":"THE BLIZZARD OF \u201978"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>John Tustin<\/h5>\n<p>When I was a little boy there was a snowstorm<\/p>\n<p>And it lasted for days.<\/p>\n<p>When it was over the snow was piled so high<\/p>\n<p>That I was trapped on my dead end street<\/p>\n<p>With my brothers and my parents<\/p>\n<p>And the neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>All I can remember is the mountain of snow the snowplows<\/p>\n<p>Placed right on my streetcorner<\/p>\n<p>And that the neighborhood kids and my brother and I<\/p>\n<p>Had some snowball fights.<\/p>\n<p>The one memory I have, a moment indelible in my mind,<\/p>\n<p>Is looking out the window at all the snow.<\/p>\n<p>The blinding white of it, the totality of it.<\/p>\n<p>I looked out wanting to be in it<\/p>\n<p>And I looked out happy I was safe and warm<\/p>\n<p>With the radiator hissing as I stood there in my jammies<\/p>\n<p>Thinking about whether to go outside for a while<\/p>\n<p>Or find some paper and a pencil and draw \u2013<\/p>\n<p>Knowing I could come back in the moment I was cold<\/p>\n<p>Or something went awry.<\/p>\n<p>All that snow and machinery of humanity at a standstill<\/p>\n<p>While Paul Asaparti and Paul Matto pummeled the Fox twins with snowballs<\/p>\n<p>As my brother Robert made them more and more to throw.<\/p>\n<p>I think that maybe the blizzard of \u201878<\/p>\n<p>Was the last time that I felt really safe.<\/p>\n<p>I know I haven\u2019t felt safe since<\/p>\n<p>For more than a day,<\/p>\n<p>If that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Tustin When I was a little boy there was a snowstorm And it lasted for days.
