{"id":258,"date":"2022-11-13T22:56:08","date_gmt":"2022-11-13T22:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/18-1\/?page_id=258"},"modified":"2022-11-13T23:28:19","modified_gmt":"2022-11-13T23:28:19","slug":"fallen-breath","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/18-1\/poetry\/fallen-breath\/","title":{"rendered":"Fallen Breath"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>Kati Fuchs<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fall is one of the most beautiful<\/p>\n<p>seasons<\/p>\n<p>for all sorts of good reasons<\/p>\n<p>but<\/p>\n<p>when you really stop to think-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>there is a morbid link<\/p>\n<p>between fall<\/p>\n<p>and death\u2019s imminent call.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sickly cold of every breeze<\/p>\n<p>Is what I\u2019ve been told<\/p>\n<p>Is fall\u2019s final breath<\/p>\n<p>as it becomes victim to a<\/p>\n<p>cruel, concerning death.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that\u2019s why<\/p>\n<p>with this,<\/p>\n<p>the unhinged world<\/p>\n<p>is so hauntingly obsessed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The trees pleading,<\/p>\n<p>bleeding,<\/p>\n<p>to desperately show<\/p>\n<p>they\u2019re never ready,<\/p>\n<p>not meant,<\/p>\n<p>to go,<\/p>\n<p>to move past,<\/p>\n<p>sunshine-filled moments<\/p>\n<p>that were never to last.<\/p>\n<p>Beauty stripped,<\/p>\n<p>Fearing they\u2019re ill-<\/p>\n<p>equipped<\/p>\n<p>for another wild, midwestern winter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But<\/p>\n<p>we make the most of what is left<\/p>\n<p>pretending<\/p>\n<p>there is no such thing as winter\u2019s theft.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Embracing every slight and powerful breeze<\/p>\n<p>Shifting our hearts and brains at ease,<\/p>\n<p>Watching the leaves delicately flow<\/p>\n<p>even when they\u2019re reluctant to go,<\/p>\n<p>green to gold to gone.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To the ground, they messily pile.<\/p>\n<p>Providing us another reason to smile:<\/p>\n<p>the satisfying crunch,<\/p>\n<p>another unintentional punch,<\/p>\n<p>to our beloved season<\/p>\n<p>as the leaves<\/p>\n<p>barely hang on,<\/p>\n<p>but here\u2019s a conclusion<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve subsequently drawn:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A continual breeze undulating<\/p>\n<p>around<\/p>\n<p>the release of the final leaf,<\/p>\n<p>awaiting,<\/p>\n<p>feeling<\/p>\n<p>resistance decrease-<\/p>\n<p>the point in which<\/p>\n<p>we switch<\/p>\n<p>from feeling this fallen breath<\/p>\n<p>as a kiss of death.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s ok to let go-<\/p>\n<p>especially when you know<\/p>\n<p>none of it were to last,<\/p>\n<p>just take a step past<\/p>\n<p>and relax.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Feel your tension flee<\/p>\n<p>After that you\u2019ll see<\/p>\n<p>this season return<\/p>\n<p>After seasons of growth<\/p>\n<p>but for now,<\/p>\n<p>Be thankful<\/p>\n<p>for each gentle breath.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kati Fuchs &nbsp; Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons for all sorts of good reasons but when you really stop to think- &nbsp; there is a morbid link between fall and death\u2019s imminent call. &nbsp; The sickly cold of every breeze Is what I\u2019ve been told Is fall\u2019s final breath as it becomes victim to a cruel, concerning death. &nbsp; Maybe that\u2019s why with this, the unhinged world is so hauntingly obsessed. &nbsp; The trees pleading, bleeding, to desperately show they\u2019re never ready, not meant, to go, to move past, sunshine-filled moments that were never to last.
