After Natasha Tretheway “What Is Evidence”<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not the girl you once knew covered<\/p>\n

with makeup, hiding dark circles<\/p>\n

like crescent-moons beneath the eye,<\/p>\n

nor that quivering high schooler<\/p>\n

who hid it all, leaning on her homework<\/p>\n

to survive. Not the picture once<\/p>\n

painted of a pious perfectionist \u2014<\/p>\n

its pigment now peeling to show<\/p>\n

reality underneath. Not the tiny rule-following child<\/p>\n

with her songs, her trust, singing<\/p>\n

Follow the prophet! with such zeal.<\/p>\n

Only the tattoos tracing my body \u2014 daring<\/p>\n

testament of the rebellion undertaken<\/p>\n

to embrace my truth \u2014 demonstrate this girl<\/p>\n
