{"id":614,"date":"2022-11-19T05:09:38","date_gmt":"2022-11-19T05:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/18-1\/?page_id=614"},"modified":"2022-11-19T05:12:56","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T05:12:56","slug":"the-final-gamble","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/18-1\/poetry\/the-final-gamble\/","title":{"rendered":"THE FINAL GAMBLE."},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Triasha Mondal<\/h5>\n<p>In the deserted city of Syracuse<\/p>\n<p>East coast of ancient Greece,<\/p>\n<p>The guerrilla truce, the Jews lose<\/p>\n<p>The monarch fell, the rules cease.<\/p>\n<p>A vision of desolation, a deflating population, none remained but young Artemis.<\/p>\n<p>At dawn she sings a dismal song<\/p>\n<p>Which goes like this,<\/p>\n<p>&ensp;<em>Ave Maria, in armis tuis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&ensp;<em>Lucem inveniam<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After her song, she trudged along<\/p>\n<p>Between the woods, beneath the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Artemis; mother to four- Lily,<\/p>\n<p>Jose, Poppy and Theodore<\/p>\n<p>After the guillotine attack, nearly died of young Jack.<\/p>\n<p>Homeward, she comes only to stand before the helpless sight;<\/p>\n<p>Of little Theo rummage for his sisters\u2019 lives<\/p>\n<p>In the carnage, where the weak<\/p>\n<p>Were slain with the guilty man\u2019s knives.<\/p>\n<p>&ensp;<em>Du soleil \u00e9clatant qui<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&ensp;<em>\u00c9tait autrefois leurs sourire<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(of the bright sunshine; that was once their smiles)<\/p>\n<p>Mid-slumber, her mind seized with thoughts..<\/p>\n<p>(\u2018we are dead; we were alive; months ago; years back; we lived and laughed; we dined, we pined; we saw the pink and violet sky; tramp and trudge; then vision<\/p>\n<p>smudged; solitary we walk; but oh life; this life; this moment of June; this very minute; sleep; seize; how do they sleep; I sob, I sob.\u2019)<\/p>\n<p>..what wild potion puts men to rest, even at the doom of their greatest unrest;<\/p>\n<p>Then gently and silently, Theo caressed.<\/p>\n<p>An echo of better days, when Artemis welcomed an unexpected guest,<\/p>\n<p>The Grecian king stood before the charming miss,<\/p>\n<p>Infrequent sighs; time invites her to shred her worth in front of his eyes<\/p>\n<p>But now, Artemis gives out a loud and galled cry<\/p>\n<p>\u201cyou see the fire under my rugged camisole, but not my people burning? Speak. For you never speak. Horsemen; pass by. Oil and tar; southwest wind; what do you think? Of war, this strife. Inexplicable splendor of the wind, speak? Of the wires they send? Nowhere a soul to call one\u2019s friend. Perhaps you never think- of me, the people, ruins, Theo, rugs, bread, dying, dead. I shall walk out as I am, hair awry; undraped and walk the street to go cry with the gulls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colossus crumbling behind her; she sat upon the shore smiling \u201cmy people humble, my people who expect nothing\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shanti. Shanti.
