She\u2019s<\/p>\n

The kind of woman<\/p>\n

Who walks across poems<\/p>\n

At 9:30 at night<\/p>\n

After the sun is down<\/p>\n

And the drink is drunk<\/p>\n

And the garbage overflows<\/p>\n

With the cans or bottles<\/p>\n

And the blues or the country<\/p>\n

Or the rock and roll<\/p>\n

Plays<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And<\/p>\n

She has long black hair<\/p>\n

In tight curled rings<\/p>\n

That enamor the sun<\/p>\n

And eyes that burn almost black<\/p>\n

Into the gut and the soul<\/p>\n

And the heart and the mind<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And<\/p>\n

She\u2019s<\/p>\n

The kind of woman<\/p>\n

That keeps you waiting<\/p>\n

At the bar<\/p>\n

Or for a return phone call<\/p>\n

Or any kind of answer at all<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But<\/p>\n

When she finally responds<\/p>\n

The heart leaps<\/p>\n

Like a prisoner watching a guard<\/p>\n

Walking swiftly toward his cell<\/p>\n

Halfway between freedom and the death chamber<\/p>\n

Holding a piece of paper<\/p>\n

That may or may not be signed<\/p>\n
