{"id":67,"date":"2022-11-06T20:53:09","date_gmt":"2022-11-06T20:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/18-1\/?page_id=67"},"modified":"2022-11-06T20:53:55","modified_gmt":"2022-11-06T20:53:55","slug":"on-visiting-park-street-cemetery","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/18-1\/poetry\/on-visiting-park-street-cemetery\/","title":{"rendered":"On Visiting Park Street Cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: left\">Somoshree Palit<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">The waning moon on the restless sky<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Smelt of fumes as fragrant glass,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Among the leaves the ravens cry &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Should I stop, or gently pass?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Like altars in pagan halls of Greece<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Stands silent graves, they wait, atone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">In a grave of darkness, broken dreams,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Embers of ignited flesh and bone.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u201cHere rests in peace a valiant lad<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Who feared not death, but God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">And beneath the ground lay all he had<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Gathered in a foreign field abroad.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Busts of Caesars, gods and men<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">In silence sing their notes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">None would know if, how and when<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Maggots tore through their throat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">In the winter moon\u2019s waning light<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">A barren tree atones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">The pale lips of smoky night<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Kisses a ground interred with bones.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">The ghostly angels, a waning night<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Stand waiting like some fallen suns;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Here violets musks like humans fight<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">On grounds of bullets, sinews and guns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Here the rose bestrewn like corpses smell,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Like fires that level lands to dust.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Imploring love, sweet love that fell<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Like incense ashes on a dead god\u2019s bust.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Ancient hands, ancient lands,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Ancient voices\u2019 predatory note,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Ancient souls their rest demand<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">With ancient hands at my throat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Far off in a kitchen a mother feeds<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">A child that waits for the world to be known.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Like a ghastly yawn the sea recedes :<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">The roads of slaughter lead to the throne.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Somoshree Palit &nbsp; The waning moon on the restless sky Smelt of fumes as fragrant glass, Among the leaves the ravens cry &#8211; Should I stop, or gently pass? &nbsp; Like altars in pagan halls of Greece Stands silent graves, they wait, atone.
