{"id":86,"date":"2022-11-06T22:17:28","date_gmt":"2022-11-06T22:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/18-1\/?page_id=86"},"modified":"2022-11-06T22:17:28","modified_gmt":"2022-11-06T22:17:28","slug":"the-man-who-was-so-many","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/18-1\/poetry\/the-man-who-was-so-many\/","title":{"rendered":"THE MAN WHO WAS SO MANY"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>John Grey<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That drunken judge of an old man<\/p>\n<p>is no longer in session.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is he in the dock<\/p>\n<p>bawling like a wounded dog.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, life is no longer<\/p>\n<p>a courtroom, an endless trial.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a library with books on<\/p>\n<p>every conceivable subject.<\/p>\n<p>Family pick and choose<\/p>\n<p>according to their current fancy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gone also is the heavyweight champ,<\/p>\n<p>the Southern Baptist devil,<\/p>\n<p>the crocodile in the swamp,<\/p>\n<p>the foul-mouthed standup comedian.<\/p>\n<p>Family hear themselves speak<\/p>\n<p>now the megaphone\u2019s been put away.<\/p>\n<p>And thoughts no longer originate elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>They spring to life<\/p>\n<p>in the heads where they are born.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From time to time, a voice,<\/p>\n<p>far in the distance, blows<\/p>\n<p>the breathy hollow notes of<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll miss me now I\u2019m gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No longer a musical philistine,<\/p>\n<p>he\u2019s an alphorn player.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Grey &nbsp; That drunken judge of an old man is no longer in session.
