Hollow Notes

James Friedman

When the words ran thin
You smiled and sighed
You said that you’d kiss me
Some other time
And I held your hand
But you didn’t hold mine
You said “you’re much more heavy than I”
“I feel lighter than air all the time”

And now the seasons have changed
The colors have fallen
There are only sad stories to tell
I asked her once about our meeting
In autumn
She told me it fell down well

She told me we fell down well
When you walked out the door
You’d forgotten your shadow
I’d thought that you’d return for sure
But then came the day I
Realized
I’d said all that was left to stay
That you had left us long
Before you were gone
That we had faded but I remained
I guess it just goes to show
That these hollow notes
They don’t hold the answer
Through the wake of the rain and the snow
It was only ever playful banter

My love’s on the run again
And my friends are far from home
How can I hope for my love to come back
When I hate what I’ve already done
Cold water
Hollow notes
Empty glasses
And a telephone
Stringing a song to a lover long gone
But the words have nowhere to go

Cold water
Hollow notes
You said “I’ve no need now for any of those”
“How can you stand to write me those poems, when you can’t even be a man”
Cold water
Hollow notes
She told me I gave her many reasons to go
But she said that she stayed
Despite all the pain
But love ain’t love
When hope is all that remains

Cold Water
Hollow notes
That is all I’ve left of love to owe
I’d turn the page but the water runs deep
Said what I said but the hill is still steep
And I know
And I’m sorry
But it’s too late to show
I’ll turn my back on the past
See how long that’ll last
And be somebody else tomorrow
