Nostalgia

Tessa Renken

If nostalgia is a liar
does it really count for much?
Does it matter that today
isn’t what we thought it was?

If nostalgia is a liar,
then there is hope for now,
the bad may be forgotten,
the good may stick around.

Nostalgia is a liar
but like a mother or a friend
she holds you in her bosom
and whispers happiness.

Into the other wider view
of a life lived with all parts,
she paints you what was lovely,
what was worth having a heart.

My lovely, lovely liar
you hold such sweet intent
I thank you for the visions
as they aid me to my rest.
