Here I stand, all alone,
\nAt the bank of an endless sea,
\nBold and tall
\nAgainst the ink black sky,
\nMy lights are shining for all to see!
\nAnd for some to follow;
\nThe sailors lost at sea.<\/p>\n
I burn all night long;
\nDo what I was born to do!
\nThe sailors worship me
\nFor I show them their way home!<\/p>\n
Then the sun rises and I’m forgotten.
\nI stand there, desolate, abandoned.
\nMy walls crack with the centuries of burden
\nOf showing the way to the travellers of the sea.<\/p>\n
The sun is up.
\nThey are back home.
\nMy need is gone.
\nThey don’t notice me.<\/p>\n
I’m crumbling from within!
\nEvery time my light shines
\nIt leaves another crack in my bricks.
\nThe paints are peeling off,
\nThe light is dimming;
\nI need to be cared for.<\/p>\n
Then one fine day,
\nSunlit and gay,
\nA sailor comes by
\nFor whom I
\nhad shone the way
\nBefore, many a times!<\/p>\n
Says he, “Oh mother, let me serve and
\nGive you the care you deserve!
\nLove and honor and all things thus
\nWhich in my heart I preserve!”<\/p>\n
Says I, “Oh son of mine,
\nan honor you do me thus!
\nTo seek me out and proffer care,
\nI thank you with all my heart!<\/p>\n
But, alas, for all I’m worth
\nI cannot accost thy help!
\nFor you, a sailor, the one I guide,
\nCannot be the one to tend.”<\/p>\n
“Oh mother my,” says he “can’t I
\nBe any help to thee!”
\nSays I “Oh son, this visit of your’s
\nHas been enough help to me.”<\/p>\n
“Then what do you seek, oh keeper of seas,
\nIn the one you will accept,
\nAnd honor him with your ascent
\nTo redeem the damage made?”<\/p>\n
“My dear son, there’s just one trait
\nThat marks the man I seek!
\nKeeper of earth, he’s firm on land
\nAnd never guided by me.”<\/p>\n
