Suspended

Kathryn Stangel

His hands moved silently, brushing over the keys

Like a duster swiftly spilling dirt-filled sills

Fingertips like feathers fall like autumn leaves

Delicate melodies pervading the quiet still

Her eyes moved wordlessly towards his sun-tanned hands

She watched as music formed beneath the black and white

Mesmerized by sweet sounds wherever his fingers land

Each note reminiscing on a memory that time forgot

Their bodies moved in rhythm, swaying to the beat

Keeping perfect time with each measure

Their legs like magnets, an inseparable feat

Their interlocking gaze- a bond that couldn’t be severed

A suspended note fades into the air

His hands laid still, her eyes turned aside

Their bodies which once an inseparable pair

Now forced to bid goodbye.

The music has ended. The memory is in the past

How sweet is the melody of love- if only it could last.
