{"id":191,"date":"2023-12-01T02:43:29","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T02:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/19-1\/?page_id=191"},"modified":"2023-12-01T02:43:29","modified_gmt":"2023-12-01T02:43:29","slug":"samsara","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/19-1\/poetry\/samsara\/","title":{"rendered":"Samsara"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>James Friedman<\/h5>\n<p>If I died in a distant land<\/p>\n<p>The leaves would sweep me up<\/p>\n<p>I would be reborn again<\/p>\n<p>To follow you, wherever you go<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019d wait for you to open up the door<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You floor me so<\/p>\n<p>The more and more I know you<\/p>\n<p>That blue feeling retreats<\/p>\n<p>To somewhere far undertow<\/p>\n<p>And sure I\u2019d like to reach the light<\/p>\n<p>But I fear any afterlife<\/p>\n<p>above or below, I couldn\u2019t be long<\/p>\n<p>If you weren\u2019t there to make it home<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And if I\u2019d lived<\/p>\n<p>A second more<\/p>\n<p>That in death I\u2019d have no memories<\/p>\n<p>Linger from my life before<\/p>\n<p>The day I met you I was reborn<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019d die a thousand times<\/p>\n<p>Never forgotten, or alone<\/p>\n<p>And yet for all the tears we cry<\/p>\n<p>For although we\u2019ve felt forlorn<\/p>\n<p>Even a scent or tincture of you<\/p>\n<p>Is a reason to be born<\/p>\n<p>In the sand or in the sky<\/p>\n<p>Wherever God is breathing life<\/p>\n<p>Forever those churning nebulae<\/p>\n<p>Who for a thousand years and more have formed our outlines<\/p>\n<p>below the stars<\/p>\n<p>and mirrored upwards evermore<\/p>\n<p>Yet In the face of pooling dread<\/p>\n<p>The brink of never-ending death<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t falter from what I\u2019ve sworn<\/p>\n<p>I would choose you again instead<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And if in your eyes I looked for the last time<\/p>\n<p>With no lifeline ahead of me<\/p>\n<p>The end of Earth and of all things<\/p>\n<p>Every single star to ever be<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d see then a fuller hue, laying deep inside of you<\/p>\n<p>The kind that gaseous light burned for eons to produce<\/p>\n<p>So when your heart finds its trust<\/p>\n<p>And when the hate is let loose<\/p>\n<p>When the sadness leaves us<\/p>\n<p>And all traces of who we were are scarce<\/p>\n<p>Well<\/p>\n<p>It was enough<\/p>\n<p>My love<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They tell me to find god<\/p>\n<p>But to hold on I had to decide I wasn\u2019t alone<\/p>\n<p>So I blindly flung myself into what was keeping me alive<\/p>\n<p>Love is the name of the thing unquestioningly<\/p>\n<p>for which I would die<\/p>\n<p>Likewise I decide I live once, thrice, or 400 times<\/p>\n<p>From the first birth to the last stroke of the sun slicing the Earth<\/p>\n<p>I would rather smoke line the horizon than be buried cold in the dirt<\/p>\n<p>Every word is a war waged against hatred and the dark<\/p>\n<p>Her arms are so warm, more than passion they remind me who we are<\/p>\n<p>Our names will last into the abyss that swallows the stars however bright<\/p>\n<p>Our love will last into the absence<\/p>\n<p>And wound the dark with scar light<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>James Friedman If I died in a distant land The leaves would sweep me up I would be reborn again To follow you, wherever you go And I\u2019d wait for you to open up the door &nbsp;
