{"id":340,"date":"2023-12-07T02:49:03","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T02:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/19-1\/?page_id=340"},"modified":"2023-12-07T22:00:58","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T22:00:58","slug":"oh-how-i-wish-to-console-the-moon","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/19-1\/poetry\/oh-how-i-wish-to-console-the-moon\/","title":{"rendered":"Oh How I Wish to Console the Moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Riley Clarke<\/h5>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Oh, how I wish to console the moon.<br \/>\nThe disturbances it must see during the nights.<br \/>\nThe confessions it must listen to<br \/>\nWe force our shy moon to comfort us in the darkest of hours.<br \/>\nIt is our night light &#8211;<br \/>\na gift from Mother Nature for the creatures of Earth who fear the absence of light<br \/>\nYet when the sun has gone to sleep and you are there in solace,<br \/>\nI cannot help but feel sorry for you, Moon.<br \/>\nI see such a sad face peering down at me mimicking my own.<br \/>\nI must ask,<br \/>\nare you sad, Moon?<br \/>\nOr are you solely a reflection of the faces gazing up at you?<br \/>\nI fear it is both.<br \/>\nI wish to console you yet I cannot help but disclose my most woeful of thoughts to you only. To promise you that I will not would be untrue<br \/>\nand you are too beautiful to tell such lies to, Moon.<br \/>\nWhat an odd friendship we have.<br \/>\nLet me tie a rope around your width<br \/>\nand pull you away from the black abyss that pools around you.<br \/>\nThat way I can listen to all the horrors you have witnessed not for my own pleasure<br \/>\nbut to share the sorrow you hold in your eyes<br \/>\nand remind you that even you, Moon.<br \/>\nEspecially you, Moon,<br \/>\nare not alone.<br \/>\nAnd afterward, when your stories have run dry<br \/>\nor I have grown mad<br \/>\nI will release the rope from your bounds<br \/>\nand watch you float back up to your home with the ease of a helium balloon flying with the winds.<br \/>\n\u201cHow the weight has been lifted!\u201d<br \/>\nyou will rejoice so graciously.<br \/>\nThe next night as I ponder over the tales you told,<br \/>\nI will rush outside to greet you only to be stunned by the illumination of the skies.<br \/>\nHow bright you will beam.<br \/>\nEven the sun in its absence will be proud of the paths of light you offer.<br \/>\nI watch as you guide the lost fawns back to their mothers&#8217;<br \/>\nbaby rabbits to their holes.<br \/>\nIn the midst of it all,<br \/>\nI will catch glimpses of you from above with a smile on my face<br \/>\nonly to find that you too are smiling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Riley Clarke Oh, how I wish to console the moon.
