{"id":471,"date":"2023-12-09T00:17:30","date_gmt":"2023-12-09T00:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.illinoisstate.edu\/euphemism\/19-1\/?page_id=471"},"modified":"2023-12-09T00:17:30","modified_gmt":"2023-12-09T00:17:30","slug":"from-ground-control-to-the-universe","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/euphemism.illinoisstate.edu\/19-1\/poetry\/from-ground-control-to-the-universe\/","title":{"rendered":"From Ground Control to the Universe"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"126\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"126\">\n<h5>Kyu Kyu Thein<\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I think about how unforgiving space is.<\/p>\n<p>How we give her so much<\/p>\n<p>and she proves again and again<\/p>\n<p>of how cold-hearted she is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She tells us nothing about herself.<\/p>\n<p>Her past, her present, her future,<\/p>\n<p>everything we know about her<\/p>\n<p>is what we find out on our own.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And when she finally gets back to us,<\/p>\n<p>it\u2019s a little too late.<\/p>\n<p>A hundred light years<\/p>\n<p>have already passed us by.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lives we have lost,<\/p>\n<p>the dreams she has stolen,<\/p>\n<p>the hopes that we had,<\/p>\n<p>like she could care any less.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And yet, for some reason,<\/p>\n<p>we still find ourselves<\/p>\n<p>launching another rocket<\/p>\n<p>into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because through all the mixed signals<\/p>\n<p>she leaves for us in the stars,<\/p>\n<p>maybe she just wants someone<\/p>\n<p>to finally understand her.<\/p>\n<p>To make sense of her nebula nonsense,<\/p>\n<p>to feel her cold arms and let her hug them,<\/p>\n<p>to come into her atmosphere and stay this time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But how will we ever know<\/p>\n<p>what she really wants?<\/p>\n<p>Nature has not been kind enough<\/p>\n<p>to grant her the same language as humans.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As we stare out into the night sky,<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if she stares back<\/p>\n<p>and searches for any sign<\/p>\n<p>that she\u2019s truly not alone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kyu Kyu Thein I think about how unforgiving space is.
