Sabrina Cofer<\/span><\/p>\n

I spent a summer in your tiny house by the lake<\/span><\/p>\n

waking up to your voice from a hostel bunk,<\/span><\/p>\n

words dizzy with the miles and 7-11s,<\/span><\/p>\n

sweat and mirage of Japan\u2019s countryside.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Under kousa dogwoods and ornate shrines<\/span><\/p>\n

you fed the deer round crackers,<\/span><\/p>\n

found them unafraid and overwhelming,<\/span><\/p>\n

muzzles wet and insistent on your palms.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Belly full of disco fries and summer shandy<\/span><\/p>\n

I curled my body into a ball and tipped into<\/span><\/p>\n

chlorine, the drop a hair\u2019s breadth then a ripple,<\/span><\/p>\n

the muddled sound of my heartbeat, capsized.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At night I climbed the loft ladder to 90-degree hell,<\/span><\/p>\n

pulled the sheet into a tent over my head and watched<\/span><\/p>\n

the mosquitoes put on a puppet show, my ankles<\/span><\/p>\n

smeared with dried blood and lavender oil.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your feet grew callouses through worn soles<\/span><\/p>\n

as you slumped into egg salad and jasmine green tea.<\/span><\/p>\n

I donned an apron and unpacked raspberry preserves,<\/span><\/p>\n

jars of olives eyeballing the aisles, shiny tins of sardines.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In August we collapsed into each other at the airport<\/span><\/p>\n

then reassumed our places on opposite ends of a string.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
