Michael Eyre<\/span><\/p>\n

Beneath the spread of urban sprawl,<\/span><\/p>\n

a world of water lies concealed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Predating railways, dug by hand,<\/span><\/p>\n

it threads through mill towns, grassy fields.<\/span><\/p>\n

Round each bend, whispering echoes<\/span><\/p>\n

of steam engines, blast furnace glow,<\/span><\/p>\n

painted boats, their coal piled high,<\/span><\/p>\n

drawn by Welsh Cobs in slow-moving tow.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now there are more boats than ever;<\/span><\/p>\n

the smoking chimneys have all gone.<\/span><\/p>\n

They spend their days drifting along,<\/span><\/p>\n

a corridor alive with birdsong.<\/span><\/p>\n

The scenery moves slowly,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

past hedgerows of dog-rose and thorn,<\/span><\/p>\n

regiments of terraced houses,<\/span><\/p>\n

a clattering train’s warning horn.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

An angler watches, envious,<\/span><\/p>\n

as a blue kingfisher swoops to feed.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A family gathers blackberries,<\/span><\/p>\n

as swans serenely nibble weed.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A boat lies moored by an empty lock,<\/span><\/p>\n

beside the rushing overspill.<\/span><\/p>\n

Click, click of a winding windlass,<\/span><\/p>\n

as tumbling waters rise to fill.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A yapping dog gives chase to ducks<\/span><\/p>\n

who quack and squabble over bread.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The ping-ping of a cyclist\u2019s bell,<\/span><\/p>\n

a runner\u2019s face all flushed and red.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Blue sky reflects in still water,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

the image, mirror-like, rebounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

A slow-paced, tranquil idyll,<\/span><\/p>\n
