Adrian Cole
Wonder if we’ll even make it to October
What would it be like if the moon shone for just one extra hour
The deer is sunk into the cornfield
We drove on for miles some days not even sure where to go
Do we wander like this endlessly
In the summer I expect the stag died
Someone told me life should be a bliss in ignorance
Does genius keep happiness as a far friend then
When I found the thing it’s skin half rotted, maggots infested the eyes and writhed around the
parted lips
Another fucking year and I know nothing
Will this be how they write my tombstone
I returned in a number of weeks to find coyotes dragged the carcass off
Another week and someone had taken the mighty antlers, pulled straight from the head
The skull remained, staring into me sightless and for a moment un-alone
I don’t know if you understand how much I hold you dear
Will you watch on another few years
The deer knew me
