Today in Middleville

by John Grey

The crash that made
the news this morning,
has been mostly cleared
from the highway.
All that remains
is some guy sweeping up glass.

And there’s a service today
for the school kid
who died running track.
At 11.00 a.m.,
his classmates will honor him
with a moment of silence.

But the football team won.
For the seniors, it’s their last game.
For the cheerleaders, their appreciation
for young sweaty men in tight uniforms,
thumping each other on a grassy field,
will never be more palpable.

It’s been a good year for the wheat.
Even the prices are fair.
And hog futures still means
one thing to the farmer
and something else entirely to the hog.
