Please Don’t Go

Sarah Rothermel

Painting our faces with focus,

Putting off the inevitable truth.

The façade is constructed like makeup is layered,

The wall that will eventually crumble.

Painting our faces with focus,

To distract from the reality of the day.

Because when it is time to say goodbye,

The intricate paint is eroded away.

As our hearts slowly break,

We hold each other to numb the pain

Until the very last possible moment.

Once you leave, I count the days

Until we paint again.
