I’ll get a house

Abby Karstrand

After all this, I’ll get a house
With my lover.
She’ll be the one to take care of the garden.
(I still won’t have a knack for that sort of thing)
And it’ll have a lovely front porch.
And everyday I’ll sit on it and read
And get to know the neighborhood dogs when they walk past with their owners.
Me and my lover
Will come back to each other after work everyday
And cook dinner.
We’ll mix cocktails
Garnished with orange peels
Or olives
Or whatever else feels fancy or romantic
And tell each other what we’ve learned
What we’ve read
And never go to bed angry with each other.
I’ll keep my hair short
And she’ll keep her hair long
So I have something to run my fingers through.
But if she asked me
To grow my hair
I would
So she could have something to hold on to
Between her knees at night.
Everyday will pass without a rush
Without the hurry that dragged me through my youth.
Me and my lover will come to each other,
And we’ll know nothing is built to last, really
But we’ll love each other just the same.
