Like Water, Like Wine

There’s a little life out there
Swimming in a lake, frozen over
They skate above her screaming
Atop the water and get high
All the cracks of glass and scripture
Drifting far below the ice

There’s a feather on the wind
Falling from the weight of the escape
Twisting from another’s sin
It falls in ichor, doesn’t falter
Though it’s sanguine and divine
It’s tasted water once before
Though it once was promised wine

In the orchard of the abyss
Senses dance senseless with dread
They throw themselves to the floor
While an Ibis flies overhead
In your sleep you leave your teeth
And boat upon a Styx of blood
Suck the marrow out of life
Take a breath before the flood
Your lungs may fill with water
You tell yourself “it’s good”

And it happened again
You always risk your heart
In the race to find your head
It will happen again
Every -ness you find in life
Just a tide that breaks the end
Just a kiss to drink tonight
If you don’t find yourself drunk instead

She plants a seed out in the sand
Where no young girl ever should
She drank the tears left by the sky
So she waters it with blood
She prays it’s a Joshua tree
In truth she won’t know till she falls
Her parched lips kiss its skin
Vessel or vesicle
Though she’s tired it’s still the brink
She forgets her hands in the kitchen sink
Whatever’s thrown her way, she’ll say “it’s fine”
Like water, like wine
