“The List”

Holly Buescher

in a fix
cake mix
garden hoes
rows and rows
used breck’s
hair’s a wreck
jekyll and hyde
broken inside
empty holes
children’s souls
swallows all
sticky wall
bird flies
parrot dies
happy place
mamba’s grace-

On and on the list goes,
never ceasing, always grows.
All things green gone to black,
things wanted, things we lack.
What to hope for in a world,
where struggles come in swirls,
of fingerprints on the hand,
who holds the golden grains of sand.

Yet on we go, on we travel,
though the thread always unravels.
Sometimes fleeting life is found,
green growing from black ground.
Though the worries are ingrained,
in our faces, flows through the veins,
there is also fire there,
which burns with all our dreams and cares.
Dreams and cares that never die,
for in our heart of hearts they lie.
