Not strong enough
at 547 days
--seconds clinging
to the long tips
of her hair --
for proxy or words
that bridge across
languages of ocean,
rock, his last image
of her in profile, her
nose down turned
--he remembers how
her mouth curled like
a cat’s, how he
never minded being
the mouse --
he shuts his eyes
like scissors to avoid
witnessing the tragic
moment of transportation
--she had told him
to wait for a surprise--
and though he knows
his eyes are still blue
beneath the lids,
somehow he feels
they should be colorless.
