Snacks

Brennen McDowell

Come sweet Sylvia,

I heard about what you did

Bad girl.

you tried in veins

to kill yourself.

by snacking on lots and lots

of little blues and little whites

then hid away in a catacomb

with wood and dust mites

where no one would find you

losing all of your breath

finally you could sleep and sleep

and die and die.

Bad girl.

you didn’t have enough to eat!

those little colored treats didn’t work.

and all you got was food poisoning.

Bad girl.

Everyone felt terrible about you

for a period of seven weeks and two days.

every one wants to seem to care

for the period of seven weeks and two days.

then they turned their lids shut,

when you say your despair,

no wonder you were so hungry for more snacks.

Bad girl.

You tried to die to escape them,

they keep giving you good reason

You tried to die to kill them from your life,

they keep giving you good reason.

Bad girl.

they stuck you in an igloo,

hoping the cold would thaw you out.

your time was served,

and you had prepared yourself a mind.

but then you lost it again,

and grew hungry for more snacks.

Bad girl.

they simply failed their best

to pretend to care

but they had a gift for explaination

and could tell others

the nature of your “fragile” state

they took you to parties,

they loved to see your question face,

but your dear heart,

scared them too, too much

to help you palpitate.

you thought you heard a dinner bell.

hide all your babies.

you thought you heard a dinner bell.

this time you won’t mess up.

you thought you heard a dinner bell.

Good girl.
