Eyes on Tomorrow

Lauren Lubas

A vicious memory

underneath the places

where the acorn falls.

We learn of gravity

not from Newton

but chicken little.

We learn of rivers

not from Earth but

from gingerbread men.

We sink and fall

the ocean is too

dangerous.

On this flat Earth,

the mountains are

too sharp

And fear

dominates

the news.

It is why I don’t

leave the house

after dark.
