671, Towanda

Katie Holbrook

I didn’t push it back this time
as the orbs
of red and white blurred
and raced from view,
heliocentric rings
like so many sunsets
fading
into the distance,
chains of moments
between them,
break
ing the rhy
thm.

You half-smiled
and tried to mean it;
we were so close to home
and directions are
forced upon us
but we know backroads,
freight trains and sidestreets.
We are bigger than they know, my dove.

We push back time,
race to the beats of our hearts.
With you,
who needs the stars,
streetlights,
turn signals?
Your fingers brushed over the branches,
the skin,
as if you didn’t know

you run within them.
