Dinner for Three

Kristen Lee

“And that’s how you make paella,” he said as he sprinkled the top with peas. Cooking was always his passion and watching him cook, she could see the joy beaming from his eyes. She had never been a good cook herself, so she always loved watching him work his magic in the kitchen.

She had been staying with him for the past few days as she was visiting him for a long weekend off from school. From the time they woke up, until the time they went to sleep, everything had been perfect.

“I could get used to this,” she thought to herself, a smile slightly starting to creep up on her face.

“Why are you smiling, you creep?” He asked playfully.

“Huh? Oh…I was just…admiring your cooking skills,” she said, looking away in embarrassment.

“Well, the paella’s done. Ready to eat? It might not be that good. I didn’t have any shrimp shells to make the stock so I just had to use plain water.”

“I’m sure it’ll taste fine.” The two began to eat. She was savoring every single bite of the paella when,

“Hello?” He answered his cell phone.

“Who is it?” She nosily whispered.

“Oh, hey. What’s up. I’m eating right now. Uh-huh. Yea. Yea, she’s with me right now. She’s been here for the past couple of days. She’s going back on Monday.”

“Who is it?” She asked, more curious than ever. No response. She began playing with a few peas on her plate and was becoming irritated.

“No she got here Thursday night. What’s up, did you need something? Oh. I’m good. We’re just eating dinner right now.”

“Okay. Seriously. Who the hell is it.”

“Hey, uhh…I gotta go. I’ll call you later.” He abruptly ended his cell phone conversation and reverted his attention back to her.

“Who was that?” She asked, glaring at him. She already had a guess who it was before he could even answer.

“It was Megan.”

“What does she want.”

“Nothing. Just wanted to say hi. Which is weird because she only calls me whenever she needs something from me.”

“I don’t like that.”

“Don’t like what?”

“That she calls you whenever she needs something. Or just calls you for that matter. Doesn’t she have a boyfriend?”

“Yea, but they’ve been having problems.”

“So that means you two have been talking.” She was reaching her boiling point, but tried to keep her cool. It hadn’t even been a few months since Megan had tried to “steal” him back.

“Yea. So?”

“So? What do you mean, ‘so?’”

“It’s not that big of deal. You talk to Adam all the time.” He replied defensively.

“First of all, I do not talk to him all the time. Second, he never tried to make a move on me while I was with you so he could steal me back.”

“Okay, I’m sorry. What do you want me to do. I’m not going to screen her calls and not answer them. As much as you may want me to do that, I’m not going to.” At this, she began to feel a knot in her chest. Before the tears started to well up in her eyes, she got up and walked towards his room.

“Why can’t he just let go.” She sighed softly. A single tear rolling down her cheek.
