Sonnet #1

Deanna Bruno

Is misery supposed to inspire brain
Burst and gush to the frontier of insight
Flicker like doves from a wrecked cage
Into fatigued future minds full with light

Does it devastate life like dynamite
Eruptions leave salt stained cares
Shade your soul and steals your sight
Mouths only move in nightmares

Is it the prayer you say in bed at night
The word CAUTION read on a sign
The wisdom you earn before you die
The burden that snugly binds

Does it make you debris discarded
Or will you rise up and destroy it
