Artist Statement:

MANDEM’s work is an exercise in categorical violations, exploring the mythic boundaries between humans, animals, and machines; anachronism, juxtaposition, and magical realism break down expectations about history, social norms, gender, and biological possibilities.

Both the theoretical and world building aspects of MANDEM’s work have been deeply informed by a background in antiquities, mythology, intellectual history, and literary theory. By transmogrifying foundational metaphors and myths of western culture, art can point the way to a new postmodern (and perhaps postapocalyptic) mythos.

The content of the work is often described as dark, but MANDEM prefers to consider it spiritual chiaroscuro -- the horrific elements are shadows that are always meant to bring the luminescence of the soul into relief, as the sublime violently brings the beautiful into
existence.
