Do you ever just want to scream
the lyrics to Smash Mouth’s “All Star,”
to make sure you’re still alive after eating too much ice cream?
Or think about how exquisite the moment would be
if the sky actually did fall?
There are things
like this
that make you feel so concrete,
grounded.
Like the twisted roots
of hundred year old trees
that have withstood tornadoes.
The way it feels
to hug someone that’s just the right height,
or taking that bite of pizza
even though it’s too hot
but totally worth it anyways,
because you will always love pizza
even if it hurts you sometimes.
You need that lingering pain on the roof of your mouth,
to let you know you’re still there,
tangible,
alive.
